Paris is magical all year round, but in autumn it becomes something else entirely. The light turns golden, the leaves glow in amber, rust and deep red, and even a simple walk along the Seine feels like a scene from a movie. This is why an autumn photoshoot in Paris is unique.
As a Paris photographer since 2017, I can tell you that autumn is one of my favorite seasons to shoot. The crowds are thinner, the light is softer, and the city gives you a natural color palette that no filter can imitate.
If you’re planning a photoshoot in Paris this fall, here is everything you need to know: the best locations, the best timing, and a few tips to make your photos truly stand out.
When Is the Best Time for Autumn Colors in Paris?
In Paris, the foliage usually peaks from late October to mid-November, depending on the weather of the year. A mild autumn can stretch the colors well into November, while a stormy week can bring the leaves down faster than expected.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Golden hour is your best friend. In early November, the sun sets around 5:30 pm, so an afternoon session starting around 3:30 or 4:00 pm gives you soft, warm light and a magical sunset finish.
- Cloudy days are great too. Overcast skies give a soft, even light that is very flattering for portraits and makes the colors look rich and deep.
- Weekday mornings are the calmest time in the most popular parks.
Not sure about the timing? That’s exactly what I’m here for: we’ll pick the best day and hour together, and adjust to the weather.
The 7 Best Places for an Autumn Photoshoot in Paris
1. Jardin des Tuileries
Between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, the Tuileries are a classic. The tree-lined alleys turn golden in autumn, and the round fountain basins reflect the sky and the falling leaves. You can walk from the garden to the Louvre Pyramid in a few minutes and get two completely different atmospheres in one session.
Perfect for: couples, engagement sessions, elegant portraits.
2. Jardin du Luxembourg
Few places feel as Parisian as the Luxembourg Gardens: the famous green chairs, the Medici Fountain, the palace in the background, and trees that blaze with color in November. It’s a favorite for relaxed, natural portraits and family photos.
Perfect for: families, solo travelers, lifestyle-style shoots.
3. Notre-Dame and the Île de la Cité
Since its reopening, Notre-Dame has become a must-see again, and autumn is a wonderful time to photograph it. The golden light brings out the warm tones of the stone, and the trees in the gardens around the cathedral, like Square Jean XXIII behind it, add touches of orange and yellow to your frame. Along the Seine, the quays, the green boxes of the bouquinistes and the bridges around the island give you plenty of variety within a few minutes’ walk. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to enjoy the area with fewer crowds and soft light.
Perfect for: couples, honeymooners, families, and anyone who wants a timeless Paris backdrop with a touch of history.
4. Montmartre
Cobblestone streets, ivy-covered walls, colorful façades, and staircases lined with trees: Montmartre is stunning in the fall. Early in the morning, the quiet streets feel like a village, and the view over Paris with the Sacré-Cœur nearby is unforgettable.
Perfect for: solo travelers, couples, and anyone dreaming of a romantic Paris atmosphere.
5. Trocadéro, Bir-Hakeim and the Eiffel Tower
You can’t leave Paris without your Eiffel Tower photo, and autumn gives it a very special mood. Around the Bir-Hakeim bridge and the Trocadéro gardens, you can combine golden trees, the Seine, and the iron lady in the background. Add a soft sunset and you get the kind of image you’ll want to print and frame.
Perfect for: every type of session, especially at sunset.
What to Wear for an Autumn Photoshoot in Paris
Your outfit makes a big difference to the final result. Here are my favorite tips:
- Choose warm, earthy tones: camel, burgundy, mustard, rust, forest green, cream, and chocolate brown blend beautifully with the fall palette.
- Avoid neon colors and busy patterns. They tend to fight with the scenery.
- Layers are your friend. A trench coat, a wool coat, a chunky scarf, or a stylish knit add texture and depth to the photos, and keep you warm between shots.
- Think about movement. A long coat, a flowy dress, or a scarf in the wind will give your photos life.
- Dress for the temperature. Paris in November can be chilly, so bring gloves and a warm jacket for the breaks. Comfortable shoes are also essential, as we may walk between locations.
- Couples and families: coordinate your colors rather than matching exactly. For example, one person in cream and another in burgundy looks harmonious and natural.
My Tips for the Best Autumn Photos
- Play with the leaves. Walking through fallen leaves, tossing a handful in the air, or simply strolling hand in hand always creates joyful, spontaneous images.
- Be flexible with the weather. A light drizzle can actually create beautiful moods, with shiny cobblestones and reflections. Bring an umbrella (a clear or neutral one looks great on camera!).
- Don’t overplan. The best photos often happen between the “planned” poses. I’ll guide you with simple directions so you feel relaxed and natural, even if you’ve never done a photoshoot before.
- Warm up with a coffee break. A stop in a Parisian café can become part of the story and give you a few cozy, candid shots.
- Book early. Autumn is a popular season, and the best light hours fill up quickly.
